New Photographer FAQ

This page is my attempt to answer many of the questions I had when starting out and also most of the ones rattling around in my inbox. If you have a question, contact me on the tab above and I will do my best to answer it!

How did you get started?
Well like many it was a passion that turned into a career. I have explained in a little more detail here.

What type of camera should I get?
The first choice you need to make is Canon vs. Nikon. Only you can decide. But choose wisely because that decision will impact the rest of your gear purchases. I’d suggest a entry-level dSLR to get you started.

What books/classes do you suggest?
Unfortunately, there is no quick way  to learn photography.
I did read Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson but the best teacher truly is experience.
I am also a member of a photography group that meets once a month and I have learned a ton from these girls.

What gear do you use?
I own the following Canon gear:
Canon 5D mark II
Canon 5D
Canon 40D
Canon 85mm 1.2
Canon 35mm 1.4
Canon 70-200mm 2.8 IS
Canon 50mm 1.4
Canon 16-35mm 2.8
Canon 15mm 2.8
Canon 28-135mm 3.5 IS
Canon 580 EX II Speedlight
Canon 430 EX Speedlight
Pocket Wizards Wireless Remote Transmitters

Bags:
Think Tank Airport International
Shootsac
Kelly Moore Bag

Hard & Software
24″ iMac
15″ Macbook Pro
Adobe CS4
Adobe LR
Photo Mechanic

Can I assist you on location?
I do have opportunities for unpaid session assistants from time to time. Please contact me for more information.

Should I go to photography school?
My answer would be that it is not necessary, but you have to decide for yourself.
