The Fifth Year

The first, second, third, fourth and now the fifth. Every year with you has held it’s ups and downs. But none like this one. Year five has taught me more about life, love and marriage than the sum of all of my years leading up to it.

My Love, you have shown me warmth, patience, kindness and grace when I deserved anything but. You have unfailingly reflected the character of Jesus Christ and reminded me of the honor it is to be His bride, and yours. I thank you. I adore you.

Apple & Goat Cheese Honey Tarts

I get made fun of for my love of honey. Goat Cheese also ranks pretty high in my book and apples are one of my favorite fall delights. So when I saw the recipe pop up in my Pinterest feed I knew these tarts would one day be mine. Now I need to admit, I am not one of those girls who makes time to bake. I enjoy it but it falls pretty far down on the list when my to-dos just never seems to lessen. But one day I had a couple girlfriends coming over for dinner so I got ambitious. I wanted some more film practice on my SLR so I decided to not only bake but shoot. Well it took me an irresponsible amount of time but the results were rather delicious. So without ado, here are my tarts, shot on the Canon EOS3 and these images are straight out of camera. I’m talking ZERO edits.

Maui

Traveling makes me come alive. The magic of exploring someplace new is one of my deepest joys in life and Maui was no exception. I had the chance to visit last month for an engagement session and while I was there I made sure to fit in a few hours of shooting film just for fun. These images make me smile because they are so different from how I typically photograph. Poppy colors, busy compositions and random inspiration but I loved it and I hope you do too. All film, Ektar 100 and Fuji 400h. Oh and that aloha cutie down there is Wendy.

Film & The Pacific Northwest

These images are the fulfillment of some big things in my world.

First, if you have been following this blog for sometime now, you might remember a post about a major career goal of mine, to shoot film. To some, that may sound like no big deal but to me, as has always been the case with this passion of mine, it was very intimidating. But I couldn’t let go of the dream so I decided to register for Film is Not Dead in Miami this December. Somewhat bummed that I had to wait for December, but excited to be taking a step.

Second and completely unrelated, anyone who knows me and many people who don’t could tell you that I have a strange love for whales. It’s slightly embarrassing and has become a bit of a joke but it’s true. Since I was a little girl, I have always loved them and dreamed of one day seeing them in the wild. Growing up in South Florida, there is next-to-no chance that will ever happen so I set my sights on someday traveling to the Pacific Northwest i.e. whale country.

In comes, Film is Not Dead and social media. Jonathan Canlas, the founder of Film is Not Dead, posted on Twitter that a spot had become available in his July workshop in Seattle. I instantly phoned Dave, got in touch with Jon and switched out of Miami and into Seattle. Dave and I had been deliberating on vacation plans for weeks and learning to shoot film in July rather than December seemed like a win to me. Not to mention, the fulfillment of my childhood dream of visiting wild whales.

So I spent a small fortune on a medium-format film camera and flew out to Seattle with no idea how to use it. Well within four hours of attending Jon’s class, I was shooting film. There were a few hiccups and I plan to post some workshop images later, but I was finally doing it. Then three days and some awesome new friendships later, Dave met me in Seattle to begin our Pacific Northwest adventure.

We started in Seattle and headed up to Friday Harbor in the San Juan’s where we spent four days watching whales, picnicking, eating seafood and just enjoying life. I needed it, we needed it, and I couldn’t be more thankful for it.

I did shoot some digital frames but for now, here are my vacation photos, every single one shot on film.

An afternoon stroll

A few months ago when I was visiting New Orleans for Hattie & Corey’s Engagement Session, I found some time for a solo stroll around Hattie’s neighborhood. I wanted to challenge myself so I took only one lens with me, a tilt-shift which requires me to manually focus every shot. Manually focusing can be tricky so it is a skill I have been working on. Since I am not big on practicing new skills on client shoots, an afternoon stroll seemed like a good idea.
